Importing data

Import chat history or memory from another AI provider

Yes. You can import chat history from other AI providers directly from the Chat History page in MultipleChat. Open Chat History, choose Import Chat History, then upload a .json or .csv export from MultipleChat, ChatGPT, Claude, or another supported AI platform. This imports conversations. It does not import uploaded files, attachments, images, PDFs, or documents from the old provider.

Quick answer

Go to https://multiplechat.ai/chat_history, open the import dialog, and upload your .json or .csv chat export. The import tool supports exports from MultipleChat, ChatGPT, Claude, and other AI platforms. Only chat history is imported. Files and attachments from previous chats are not imported.

Where to import

Import chat history in the MultipleChat app, not on the public support website.

  1. Sign in at multiplechat.ai.
  2. Open Chat History, or go directly to https://multiplechat.ai/chat_history.
  3. Click the import button to open the Import Chat History dialog.

What you can import

  • .json chat history exports.
  • .csv chat history exports.
  • Exports from MultipleChat, ChatGPT, Claude, and other AI platforms.
  • Multiple files, up to 10MB each.

What cannot be imported

  • Uploaded files from old conversations.
  • Attachments such as PDFs, Word documents, spreadsheets, presentations, images, audio, or video.
  • Provider-side tools, custom GPTs, projects, artifacts, canvases, folders, or settings.
  • Memory settings as a special system object. If you want memory, export or copy the memory text and import it as context.

If you still need those documents in MultipleChat, upload the files separately in a new chat or project after importing the conversation history.

Step 1: Get your chats out of your old AI (export)

Before you can import anything, you need to download a file of your old chats from the AI you used before. Pick the guide below that matches the app you came from. Take your time and follow every step in order.

If you used ChatGPT

  1. Open chatgpt.com in your browser and log in.
  2. Look at the bottom-left corner of the screen. Click your name or your small round profile picture.
  3. A small menu pops up. Click Settings.
  4. In the Settings window, click Data controls on the left.
  5. Find the line that says "Export data" and click the Export button next to it.
  6. A box asks you to confirm. Click Confirm export.
  7. ChatGPT now sends an email to your inbox. This can take a few minutes. Open that email.
  8. In the email, click Download data export. A file lands in your Downloads folder.
  9. That file is a .zip. Double-click it to open it. Inside, find the file ending in .json — that is the one you will upload. Remember it is in your Downloads folder.

If you used Claude

  1. Open claude.ai in your browser and log in.
  2. Click your initials or profile in the corner of the screen.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Look for Privacy, Data, or Export data and click it.
  5. Click Export and confirm if it asks.
  6. Download the file. It saves to your Downloads folder as a .json or .csv file.

If you used a different AI tool

  1. Open the AI app you used before and log in.
  2. Open the account menu or Settings (usually behind your name or profile picture).
  3. Look for any word like Data, Privacy, Export, Download data, or Conversation history and click it.
  4. Click the button that exports or downloads your conversations.
  5. Download the file to your computer.
  6. Important: the file must end in .json or .csv. If it is anything else, MultipleChat cannot read it.

✓ Check before moving on: You should now have a file ending in .json or .csv sitting in your Downloads folder. Don't lose it — you'll need it in the next step.

Step 2: Put your chats into MultipleChat (import)

Now you'll upload the file you just downloaded. Follow each step exactly.

  1. Open multiplechat.ai in your browser and log in.
  2. Go to the Chat History page. The quickest way: type multiplechat.ai/chat_history in your browser's address bar and press Enter.
  3. Look just under the search and filter buttons, near the top. You will see a row of words: Export JSON · Export Text · Delete All · Import Chats.
  4. Click Import Chats.
  5. A small window pops up that says "Drop files here or click to browse."
  6. Click that box. Your computer's file picker opens.
  7. Go to your Downloads folder, click the .json or .csv file from Step 1, then click Open.
  8. Have more than one file? Add them the same way. Each file must be under 10MB.
  9. Make sure the Skip duplicate chats checkbox is ticked. This stops the same chat being added twice.
  10. Click the Import button. (If it is greyed out and won't click, you haven't selected a valid .json or .csv file yet — go back two steps.)
  11. Wait a few seconds for it to finish.
  12. Done! Your old chats now appear as cards on the Chat History page. Use the search box at the top to find a specific one.

Two things to know so you don't panic:

  • Only the conversations come over. Files you had attached before (PDFs, Word docs, images) do not come with them. If you need those, just upload them again in a new chat.
  • Memory does not import automatically. See the memory section below if you want your old preferences and instructions.

How to import memory

Memory is different from chat history. MultipleChat imports conversations from .json or .csv files. If another provider lets you view or export memory, preferences, custom instructions, or saved facts, copy that text and add it to MultipleChat as context after importing your chats.

  1. Open the old provider's memory, personalization, custom instructions, or saved context page.
  2. Copy the useful memory text, preferences, writing style, project rules, and recurring instructions.
  3. Paste that text into a new MultipleChat conversation or project instructions.
  4. Ask MultipleChat to turn it into a clean memory summary if the copied text is messy.

Useful prompt

Turn this imported memory/context into a concise profile for future chats. Keep preferences, writing style, project context, recurring instructions, and important facts. Remove duplicates and anything that is not useful.

What not to import

  • Passwords, API keys, payment details, or private credentials.
  • Medical, legal, financial, or personal data that is not needed for the task.
  • Old conversations you do not want stored in your MultipleChat history.
  • Files or attachments that you do not want to upload separately into MultipleChat.

Troubleshooting

My export is too large

The import dialog supports multiple files with a maximum size of 10MB each. Split larger exports before importing.

The Import button is disabled

Select a supported .json or .csv file first. The button becomes available after a valid file is selected.

I see duplicate conversations

Keep Skip duplicate chats enabled during import to avoid importing the same conversations again.
