AI Web Search with Sources: Real-Time Answers You Can Check
MultipleChat works as an AI search engine with sources: turn on web search and ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok or Perplexity answer from current web pages, with the references they used collected under a Sources button.
Search engine
Perplexity Sonar plus each model's built-in search where available.
Turn it on
Search toggle in the input area (AI Team mode), or pick Research mode and it switches on automatically.
Plans
AI Collaboration, including Research mode, is listed in Pro ($20/month) and higher. Compare plans
How MultipleChat web search works
AI models only know what was in their training data. Web search lets them pull real-time information from the internet before they answer, using Perplexity Sonar plus the model's built-in search where available.
Searches before it answers
The model looks up current pages for your question instead of relying only on what it remembers.
Collects the sources
References are gathered, deduplicated and shown under a Sources button with title, domain and link.
Lets a second model check it
In Research mode, two models search independently and their sourced answers are compared for contradictions.
Example query
Illustrative, not a live result"What changed in the latest stable Python release, and is anything I use deprecated? Link the official notes."
Summarizes the new features and deprecations from the current release notes, and says which items it could not confirm.

How to use AI web search in MultipleChat
Four steps from question to an answer you can verify.
Open MultipleChat and start a new chat.
Turn on search
With AI Team mode active, click the search toggle in the input area. Or choose Research mode, which turns search on automatically.
Ask a current question
Say what you need and how fresh it must be, e.g. "since last month" or "official sources only".
Open Sources
Click Sources under the answer. In collaboration modes, Responses shows each model's raw answer with its own sources.
Turn search on for
- Current events and news
- Recent product releases or software versions
- Market data, prices and statistics
- Anything that may have changed recently
Leave search off for
- Creative writing and editing
- Code generation and debugging
- Math or logical reasoning
- Summarizing content you've already provided
Two models search. Contradictions get flagged.
In Research mode, both models answer your question independently using live web search in parallel. Their sourced answers are compared to find genuine contradictions.
A synthesis step resolves disagreements by picking the better-supported claim and combining the strongest sources from both models. Sources are grouped by the model that found them, so you can see which model backed which claim.
Flow
- 1Both models search the web in parallel
- 2Their sourced findings are compared
- 3One answer is synthesized with the best-supported sources
How to check AI sources in 60 seconds
- Open the link, not just the title. Confirm the page actually says what the answer claims.
- Check the domain. Prefer official docs, regulators, company filings and original research over reposts.
- Check the date. A current-looking answer can rest on an old page.
- Look for agreement. In Research mode, see whether both models found support for the same claim.
- No Sources button? Nothing was found. Treat the answer as unsourced and ask again with a narrower question.
Limits to know
- •Sources make an answer checkable, not automatically correct. Models can still misread or overstate a page.
- •Not every answer has sources. The Sources button only appears when sources were found.
- •Search finds publicly reachable pages. Content behind logins or paywalls may not be readable.
- •Web search is unavailable while a provider sandbox is selected. Use MultipleChat tools for web research.
- •For legal, medical or financial decisions, read the primary source and ask a qualified professional.
Where AI with sources helps most
Any question where the date matters and you need to show where a fact came from.
Business and markets
Competitor launches, public pricing, industry reports and recent company news, with links to check.
Research and study
Find recent papers and publications, then open each source to confirm it exists and says what is quoted.
Writing and journalism
Get context on current events and keep a source list for attribution and fact-checking.
Software and tech
Current release notes, changelogs, framework versions and security advisories from official docs.
Use web search for market research, competitor analysis, and customer insights

AI web search FAQ
Updated October 2026
What is an AI search engine with sources?
An AI search engine with sources searches the live web, writes an answer from the pages it found, and lists those pages so you can open them and check each claim. In MultipleChat, web search adds this to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity, and the references are collected under a Sources button below the answer.
Which search engine does MultipleChat web search use?
MultipleChat web search uses Perplexity Sonar plus each model's built-in search where available. That way the answer is based on current pages rather than only on the model's training data.
How do I turn on web search in MultipleChat?
When AI Team mode is active, a search toggle appears in the input area. Click it to turn search on or off for your session. If you select Research mode, web search is turned on automatically.
Where do I see the sources behind an answer?
Click the Sources button under the response. It opens a list of references with title, domain and a clickable link. In Research mode, sources are grouped by the model that found them. The Sources button only appears when sources were actually found.
Is there an AI that gives sources for every answer?
No AI tool can guarantee a source for every sentence. Some answers draw on general knowledge, and a model can still misread a page. MultipleChat shows sources whenever web search found them, and Research mode compares two models' sourced answers to flag contradictions, but you should still open the key sources yourself.
Which MultipleChat plan includes web search and Research mode?
Research mode is part of AI Collaboration, which is listed in the Pro plan ($20/month) and higher plans. See the plans page for current limits and what each plan includes.
