ChatGPT Plus Limits (and Every Other Plan)
ChatGPT limits depend on your plan and the model you pick. On Plus ($20/month), OpenAI meters usage over a five-hour window and a weekly window; you need allowance left in both. OpenAI’s own estimates for Plus (in Work and Codex) range from about 5–45 messages per five hours on GPT-6 Astra, 15–160 on GPT-6.1 Sol and 350–3,000 on GPT-6 Luna — estimates, not guarantees, because longer prompts, files and tools use more.
What happens when you hit the ChatGPT limit: on the free plan, GPT access pauses until the reset time shown in the app, and uploads, image creation and data analysis have their own separate caps. On Plus, Pro and Business you can wait for the reset, use a saved reset if you have one, or continue with eligible credits. One catch from OpenAI’s help center: switching to another ChatGPT model does not restore allowance in a shared usage pool — which is why many people switch to a different provider’s model instead.
Claude Usage Limits
Claude usage limits work on a rolling five-hour session. Anthropic does not publish a fixed message count; it depends on message length, attachments, how long the conversation is, and which model you use. Claude Pro ($20/month, or $17/month billed annually) gives at least five times the free plan’s usage per session — Anthropic’s own example is around 45 short messages every five hours on a less compute-intensive model. Claude Max (from $100/month) offers 5x or 20x Pro usage. Anthropic says it may also apply weekly or monthly caps.
On length, Claude is generous: on paid plans, the current chat models — Claude Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 — get a 1M-token context window. Usage across claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop counts toward the same limit. When you hit a usage limit you wait for the reset, upgrade, or (on Team and Enterprise) buy extra usage; when you hit a length limit you start a new chat or move the material into a Project.
Gemini Limits
In the Gemini app, Google’s plans scale by model access and usage. The free plan uses the Flash-Lite model; Google AI Plus ($4.99/month) adds the Flash model; Google AI Pro ($19.99/month) includes Gemini 4 Argon and a 1M-token context window; Google AI Ultra starts at $99.99/month, with a $199.99/month option that offers 20x higher usage limits than AI Pro.
On the API, Gemini 4 Argon has a unified 1,048,576-token context window. Its output is capped at 65,536 tokens by default and can reach the full window with long decode — useful for very long generated documents. Gemini 3.8 Flash also accepts 1,048,576 input tokens with a 65,536-token output limit.
API Token Limits Compared (October 2026)
If you build on the APIs rather than the apps, the gap has mostly closed: the flagships from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google all accept roughly a million tokens. Figures below are from each provider’s model and pricing documentation as of October 21, 2026.
