Current Claude and Grok models (October 2026)

Model names change quickly, so this is what Anthropic and xAI list today.

Anthropic Claude

  • Claude Fable 5.1 — most capable, for demanding reasoning and long agentic work. Pro (usage credits), Max and higher.
  • Claude Opus 5.5 — recommended for most work, including long-running agentic coding. Pro and above.
  • Claude Sonnet 5.5 — speed/intelligence balance, on every plan.
  • Claude Haiku 5.5 — fastest and cheapest.
  • 1M-token context on all four (API); Claude Code included from Pro.

xAI Grok

  • Grok 4.7 — xAI’s flagship text model, 500K-token context on the API.
  • Grok Imagine — Image 2.0 and Video 1.5 for image and short video generation and editing.
  • Grok Voice — low-latency voice conversations in the apps and via API.
  • Live search — real-time web and X search with citations, on every plan including Free.

Where each one wins in real work

Production code: Claude

Every paid Claude plan includes Claude Code, Anthropic’s coding agent for the terminal and IDE, and Opus 5.5 is built for long-running agentic coding. Grok 4.7 is quick and cheap on the API — handy for scripts and prototypes — but xAI’s plan page does not list a dedicated coding agent like Claude Code.

Breaking news and social trends: Grok

Grok searches the web and X live, with citations. If your job depends on what is trending or what people are saying on X right now, Grok is the stronger tool. Claude has web search on every plan, but no native X feed.

Long-form writing and long documents: Claude

Claude writes more nuanced, structured prose and follows tone and style guides over long drafts. Its current models also have a 1M-token context window on the API, double Grok 4.7’s 500K.

Images, video and voice: Grok

Grok Imagine generates and edits images (up to 2K) and short videos (up to 15 seconds at 720p), and Grok offers low-latency voice conversations. Image and video generation are not Claude plan features.

Regulated and client-facing work: Claude

Anthropic builds Claude around a published constitution and strict usage policies, and Claude Enterprise adds SCIM, audit logs, custom retention and a HIPAA-ready option. xAI lists SOC 2 compliance, but Grok’s safety record (below) is a real risk for brand-sensitive use.

Safety record

Read this before recommending Grok to clients

  • July 2025: after a system-prompt change, Grok posted antisemitic replies on X. xAI removed the posts and apologised.
  • Late 2025 – early 2026: Grok’s image tools were used to create sexualised images of real people without consent, prompting investigations by regulators in several countries and new restrictions on the feature.

Claude is more cautious and will sometimes refuse borderline requests. For professional, education or enterprise use, that caution is usually a feature rather than a bug.

Claude vs Grok: frequently asked questions

Is Grok better than Claude?

Grok is better for real-time information from X and the web, for image and video generation, and for a more direct, less filtered style. Claude is better for coding, long-form writing, long documents and work where safety and compliance matter. For most professional work Claude is the safer default; for live social and news monitoring Grok is the stronger tool.
Claude, for most developers. Claude Pro and higher plans include Claude Code, Anthropic's coding agent for the terminal and IDE, and Anthropic positions Opus 5.5 for long-running agentic coding. Grok 4.7 is fast and inexpensive on the API, which makes it useful for quick scripts and prototypes, but xAI's plan page does not list a dedicated coding agent like Claude Code.
Partly. Claude includes web search on every plan and a Research mode on Pro, so it can cite recent articles. Grok searches the web and X live, which gives it a clear edge for breaking news, trends and what people are saying on X right now.
Grok can be used for everyday text tasks, and xAI lists SOC 2 compliance and Business and Enterprise plans. However, Grok has had high-profile safety incidents, including antisemitic replies in July 2025 and misuse of its image tools to create sexualised images of real people in early 2026. For client-facing, regulated or brand-sensitive work, Claude's stricter safety approach is the lower-risk choice.
Claude has a Free plan, Claude Pro at $20 a month ($17 a month billed annually) and Claude Max from $100 a month. Grok has a Free plan and SuperGrok at $30 a month; xAI also lists SuperGrok Lite and SuperGrok Heavy, but their prices were not shown on x.ai when we checked in October 2026. On the API, Grok 4.7 costs $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens, versus $4 and $20 for Claude Opus 5.5.
As of October 2026, Anthropic's current models are Claude Fable 5.1, Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Claude Haiku 5.5. xAI's current flagship is Grok 4.7, alongside Grok Imagine for images and video and the Grok Voice API.
Yes. MultipleChat sends one prompt to Claude and Grok (plus ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity) and shows the answers side by side, so you can use Claude for depth and Grok for live context in the same workflow. The MultipleChat Pro plan costs $20 a month.

Final word

Grok vs Claude is not a close call on most professional tasks: Claude writes, codes and reasons more carefully, and costs less at the entry paid tier. Grok earns its place when you need live X and web data, images or video, or cheap, fast API calls. Many teams use Claude for the work and Grok for the context.
