Which free tool to pick, and why

What each one is good at, what to watch out for, and what upgrading costs.

#1 · Best overall

Google Gemini (Nano Banana)

Why pick it: High quality for a free tier, and you edit by describing the change in plain language: new background, different aspect ratio, another style.

Watch out: Limits are compute-based and not shown as a number, so heavy sessions can stop mid-project.

Upgrade: Google AI Plus $4.99/mo (2x usage) · Google AI Pro $19.99/mo (4x)

#2 · Best for precise prompts

ChatGPT (GPT Image)

Why pick it: Follows long, specific instructions well and lets you refine an image by conversation.

Watch out: Image generation has its own limit, separate from chat. When you hit it, you wait.

Upgrade: ChatGPT Plus $20/mo

#3 · Best for designers

Adobe Firefly (Firefly + partner models)

Why pick it: One free account covers Adobe's own models and selected partner models, with daily rather than monthly limits.

Watch out: Adobe does not list a daily number for the free plan.

Upgrade: Firefly Standard $9.99/mo

#4 · Best for text in images

Ideogram

Why pick it: The most reliable choice when the words in the image have to be spelled correctly.

Watch out: Private generation and unpublishing are Plus and Pro features.

Upgrade: Plus $15/mo billed annually ($20 monthly)

#5 · Best for non-designers

Canva (Canva AI)

Why pick it: The image lands directly in your design, next to templates, fonts and resizing.

Watch out: 20 uses go quickly if you also use other AI tools in Canva.

Upgrade: Canva Pro US$144/year

#6 · Most transparent daily allowance

Krea (Krea 1 + other models)

Why pick it: One free account to test several image models, with a daily allowance you can actually count.

Watch out: Costlier models use more units, so the image count drops.

Upgrade: Paid plans from about $5/mo

#7 · Best for characters and game art

Leonardo (Leonardo models)

Why pick it: Strong at polished, stylized and cinematic looks.

Watch out: Different models and settings cost different amounts of tokens.

Upgrade: Check current plans

#8 · Best if you live in Windows

Microsoft Copilot (Copilot image creation)

Why pick it: Already on most Windows PCs and phones; ask for an image in the same chat.

Watch out: Features and limits vary by device and market.

Upgrade: Check current plans

#9 · Best for social sharing

Meta AI (Muse Image)

Why pick it: Built into apps you already use, with no separate sign-up.

Watch out: Not every feature is available in every country or app.

Upgrade: Check current availability

#10 · Best for trying vector styles

Recraft

Why pick it: Clean, vector-friendly output for icons, illustrations and brand graphics.

Watch out: You need a paid plan to own and use the images commercially.

Upgrade: Check current plans

#11 · Best for full control

Open-weight models (Stable Diffusion, FLUX)

Why pick it: Fine-tune, add LoRAs and run everything locally.

Watch out: Needs a capable GPU and setup time; defaults trail the leading hosted models.

Upgrade: Free (your hardware)

When free tiers stop being enough

Free is fine for occasional images. Three things usually push people to pay.

01

The allowance runs out mid-project

A weekly credit pack or a few dozen daily images sounds generous until one brief needs 30 variations.

02

You need rights and privacy

Some free plans publish your images or keep ownership. Client and brand work usually needs a paid plan with clear terms.

03

You don't know which model will nail it

Image models have very different tastes. Testing one prompt across five free tools means five accounts and five limits.

The paid multi-model option

6 image models in one $20 Pro plan

MultipleChat is a paid plan for the point where you would otherwise juggle several tools: one prompt, up to five of six models, results side by side.

One prompt, up to five models

GPT Image, Nano Banana, Nano Banana Pro, Ideogram, Leonardo and SD3 in one Image Generator, with five aspect ratios.

Compare, then edit

Pick the best result side by side, then change the background, colours or style in Image Studio with a plain-language instruction.

Chat models included

The same plan covers ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity, with side-by-side answers, AI Collaboration and Projects with files.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free AI image generator?

For most people, Google Gemini is the best free AI image generator in October 2026: image generation and editing with Nano Banana are included in the free app, and you edit by simply describing the change. ChatGPT is a close second for following detailed prompts. Pick Ideogram when the image needs readable text, and Adobe Firefly or Canva when the image goes straight into a design.

Is there an AI image generator free for commercial use?

Several, but read the terms first. OpenAI's terms assign you ownership of what you create in ChatGPT, Ideogram says you may use its images for any purpose including commercial use, and Adobe says outputs from its Firefly models can be used commercially. Recraft is the exception: images made on its free plan are owned by Recraft, shown in its public gallery and not licensed for commercial use.

How many free images can I make?

It depends on the tool, and most makers do not publish a fixed number. Krea gives 100 compute units a day, which it puts at about 18 images with its Krea 1 model. Canva Free includes up to 20 uses of its AI tools. Ideogram gives eligible free accounts weekly credits, and Adobe Firefly's free limits refresh daily. ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot only say that image generation has its own usage limit.

Do free AI image generators add watermarks?

Most add an invisible one. Google embeds SynthID in Gemini images, Meta adds an invisible Content Seal to images made in Meta AI, and OpenAI attaches C2PA provenance metadata. Gemini's visible watermark can be switched off in its settings, except in countries where visible AI labels are required. Check each tool before you publish.

Are free AI image generators good enough for professional work?

For social posts, blog images, mockups and concept work, often yes. The limits are volume, privacy and rights: free allowances run out quickly when you iterate, some free plans publish your images by default, and commercial terms differ by tool. For regular client or brand work, a paid plan is usually worth it.

How can I compare several AI image generators at once?

Free tools run one at a time, so you paste the same prompt into each. MultipleChat is a paid alternative: the $20 Pro plan runs one prompt across up to five of its six image models (GPT Image, Nano Banana, Nano Banana Pro, Ideogram, Leonardo and SD3) and shows the results side by side. Image generation needs an active Pro or Smart plan.

How we checked: free allowances, prices, ownership and watermark details for third-party tools come from each maker's own pricing, terms or help pages as of October 2026, or from launch coverage where a maker publishes no details. They change often and vary by country and account type, so confirm them on the official page before you rely on them, especially for commercial work. MultipleChat is not affiliated with these tools.

Outgrown free tiers?

Up to five of six image models side by side, plus ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity for chat. One Pro plan for $20 a month.
